Incentives and test performance

Josh Miller points to some references:

Measuring Success in Education: The Role of Effort on the Test Itself by Gneezy et al.

When and Why Incentives (Don’t) Work to Modify Behavior by Gneezy et al.

Behavioral Economics and Psychology of Incentives by Emir Kamenica.

I have no comments on these particular articles, just wanted to post this placeholder so I can refer to it for a classroom demonstration.

During the causal inference segment of the course I want to demonstrate a simple experiment. I asked Josh if he knew of any simple econ examples I could do in class, and he suggested an experiment where students have to do some simple problem-solving task and then they are given a similar task of same difficulty level but with more motivation—for example $20 to each of the top three scorers in the task. He said that this sort of incentive really works.
