Rats!

Hey, fans of blood sports! Good news! You no longer need to spend your money on bullfight tickets in that “dream vacation in Spain.” You can get your fun right here in the city.

I say this because today we were taking our usual route home, and on 109 St between Amsterdam Ave and Broadway we saw something like 12 dead rats. And not all in one place, either! They were all along the block. I’m not exaggerating here. We’ve seen our share of dead rats on the street, and the occasional live one. But not so many at once. Maybe there was some nest of rats that got displaced and all ran out on the street at once and a bunch of them got run over?

Anyway, no need to go to Spain for this sort of excitement. You can get it all here on the good ol’ U S of A.

    • Gotta love that color coding: Bluish-purple=0, reddish-purple=5, indistinguishable shades of red=ten more categories from 10 to 55. (At least that’s how my browser renders it.)

  1. Homicide rate per 100,000 as of 2018 by country:
    – Spain: 0.62
    – United States: 4.96
It looks as if travelers have to go the other way around to see bloody shows.

    • Dollar bills bleeding on the sidewalk. Actually the street. They were not on the sidewalk. The street is where they get run over by cars (or the occasional bike . . . yuck!!).

  2. In Phoenix the doves are dying. Maybe it’s the heat, but never like this before. Maybe there’s a hawk on the loose, but usually evidence of predation is limited to a bang on the window, blood spatter, and a battered corpse. And maybe a hawk lurking on the lawn waiting for an opportunity to grab the body. Maybe it’s bird flu. When the dog discovers the body, it brings the body into the kitchen where the women scream and scatter, leaving me to dispose of the carcass. Quo vadis equality.
