1 thought on “Statistics in high schools: Towards more accessible conceptions of statistical inference

  1. A personal observation: My main recollection of statistics as taught in my final year of year school (in 1990) is an example from the textbook of an application of the Poisson distribution: calculate the probability of at least 2 (say) flaws in a pane of glass given that the mean is known. Such an example, and a forgettable first year university subject, gave me the impression that statistics is boring. Having interesting examples is an important component of teaching statistics (and other subjects). I would have found examples pertaining to disease incidence and prevalence far more interesting than the "flaws in a sheet of glass" example.
