## How tall is Kit Harrington? Stan wants to know.

We interrupt our regularly scheduled programming for a special announcement.

Madeleine Davies writes: “Here are some photos of Kit Harington. Do you know how tall he is?”

I’m reminded, of course, of our discussion of the height of professional tall person Jon Lee Anderson.

Full Bayes, please. I can’t promise publication on Gawker, but I’ll do my best.

1. Xev says:

5′ 8″ (1.73 m). He is next to some tall women in heels … 6 ft 3 in (1.91 m) for Gwendoline Christie and 5′ 9″ (1.75 m) for Sophie Tuner. All figures from IMDB.

Sorry for such a ‘straight’ answer.

2. Yeah, I don’t know, but here is an attempt:

The data is the lengths of the actresses, given in the article, and the distances in the picture (in pixels). To this I add a simple measurement model and some added uncertainty due to the unknown heel heights of the three actors. The outcome of the analysis is that it is unclear how tall Kit is, there is much uncertainty in the posterior distribution, but according to the analysis (which might be quite off) there’s a 50% probability he’s between 1.71 and 1.75 cm tall. It is stated in the article that he is NOT 5’8” (173 cm) but according to this analysis it’s not an unreasonable height, as the mean of the posterior is 173 cm.

Gentlemen: remember this time that women wear high heels to gala events and lesser heels to business events, unless the women are short, in which case they may always wear high heels.

4. jonathan says:

Three feet six inches tall. He’s a scale model photographed to look larger. See, The Stunt Man.

5. Tom M says:

Why full Bayes? He’s greater than 0 feet tall, p < .05.

6. jrkrideau says:

Sorry but who is Kit H…? Is he/she the person on the left, the centre or the right of the photo?
