A matter of perspective?

An article in The Guardian says;

David Champion, director of automobile testing for Consumer Reports magazine, said the core problem of faulty Toyota accelerators had been linked to 19 deaths in a decade, amounting to two a year of the 40,000 people killed annually on American roads.

“I find it a little odd that we’re going to have a Congressional hearing to look at those two deaths out of 40,000,” said Champion.

  1. I was really hoping someone would dig up such numbers. The media should be ashamed for the reporting. They keep telling us there had been 100 complaints. Is it 100 out of 100,000 or 100 out of 200?

  2. How often are there deaths from mechanical or electronic failure in other brands? I have been wondering if there is undue pressure on Toyota because they are the dominant automaker now.

    Anecdote: In the late '80s-early '90s a friend had a Saab that had its cruise control stick on at 75 mph (yes, he was driving too fast). Thankfully, he was able to turn the car off and pull over. It could have been much worse. There may have been a recall, but there wasn't a great outcry that I remember.

  3. Since the American Government has a monetary investment in American car companies, is it surprising that they are going after the opposition (i.e. Japanese car companies)?
