Data Analysis Using etc. etc.

Timothy Hellwig wrote a nice review of our book in The Political Methodologist.

My only complaint is that he writes, “Instructors of first-year graduate methods courses should consider complementing their texts with material from Part I.” I think we should be the primary text! In all seriousness, it would be helpful to know what he (and others) think our book should have so that it can become appropriate for a primary text. (We’re preparing to put together a shorter version suitable for basic classes in regression.) I agree completely with Hellwig in preferring “learning by doing” to “learning by lecturing.”

  1. I plan on using your book when I teach graduate methods. Probably supplemented with material from "baby" Wooldridge to get the ball rolling. But, I am a year away from the market so you will have to wait another year for the bookstore orders to start coming in.

BTW, I was at a summer conference for computational social science types and some of the students who had little empirical training were asking for recommendations on methods books. The more empirical among us all recommended the book as the best thing going. In general people had lots of good things to day about the book.

I imagine switching the text is a pain when preping a grad methods class. So look for people to switch when the re-tool a class. Also make sure all the people in the methods market (who will be starting jobs Fall 08) have a copy of the book.
