Post-doctoral position in statistical cosmology

ECOSSTAT Program National Research Agency – CNRS: Measuring cosmological parameters from large heterogeneous surveys

The ECOSSTAT program is an inter-disciplinary three year project between astrophysicists and statisticians that aims at refining the constraints on the values of parameters in the cosmological model.

To this effect, the program will combine as many observables as possible and advanced statistical methods, in order to improve the measurement of the parameters that best describe the cosmological model. Data analysis will be performed on the best data available today on Cosmic Microwave Background surveys, large and deep galaxy redshift surveys (VVDS, COSMOS), and weak lensing surveys (CFHTLS), surveys to which some of the teams in the program are participating. The goal is to extract both observables and associated uncertainties in order to refine the constraints on the cosmological parameters. Sophisticated statistical and computational tools will be necessarily developed to achieve this goal.

CEREMADE at Universite Paris Dauphine and the Institut d’Astrophysique de Paris are seeking a postdoctoral candidate ready to collaborate for a year with both astrophysicists and statisticians in the design of efficient simulation methods related to those problems. A Ph.D. in Statistics is requested, with research experience in Monte Carlo and Markov Chain Monte Carlo techniques, as well as Bayesian Statistics. Expertise in Bayesian data analysis, particle filters and high programming skills are also plusses. A preliminary knowledge of astronomy is not necessary.

The postdoctoral position is supported via the French National Research Agency (ANR), with expected net monthly salary of 1700 euros. It will be located at one of the Parisian institutions involved in the project: Universite Paris Dauphine, Ecole Nationale des Telecommunications, or Institut d’Astrophysique de Paris. The postdoctorant is expected to start in September (with the usual provisions for unexpected administrative delays).

The candidates should send their vita and arrange for some letters of recommendation to be sent
(or give the names of the people to be contacted), either by ordinary mail or via e-mail to
